When to visit the Uyuni Salt Flats: dry season or rainy season
A sheet of water or salt hexagons: the two faces of the salt flats, and how to pick your date around what you want to see.
There is no bad season for the Uyuni Salt Flats, but there are two different salt flats. Between December and March the rains cover the salt with a film of water and the sky reflects out to the horizon. From April to November the dry ground shows its hexagons and lets you reach Incahuasi Island and cross the flats from side to side.
Rainy season (December to March)
- The mirror effect, above all in January and February.
- Shorter routes: Incahuasi is not always reachable.
- We lend rubber boots and adjust the timings to the water level.
- The sunsets are the most photographed of the year.
Dry season (April to November)
- Perfect hexagons and guaranteed access to the island.
- Clear skies for the star tour.
- Very cold nights from June to August on the three-day expedition.
- Ideal for perspective photographs.
If you are unsure, send us your date on WhatsApp and we will tell you what to expect that week. No natural condition can be guaranteed, but we have spent years reading these flats.
