How to cross from San Pedro de Atacama to Uyuni without doubling back

The two-country route through Hito Cajón, the border formalities, and why the four-day private expedition is the most comfortable way to do it.

Many travelers land in Chile and want to finish in Bolivia, or the other way round. The Hito Cajón pass, at 4,500 metres beside Laguna Verde, links San Pedro with the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve and lets you string the two destinations into a single route.

The formalities

Chilean immigration is done in San Pedro and Bolivian immigration at Hito Cajón. The formalities are yours to complete; BlueMoon arranges the logistics of the crossing, the transfers in Chile with licensed operators, and the timings, which depend on the border.

Regular or premium

  • BM-08 Regular Private: lodging in the reserve's shelters and a salt hotel, ideal for groups whose priority is the route itself.
  • BM-09 Premium Private with Hotels: upgraded hotels, an extra guide on request and a gentler pace.
