A night of stars: stargazing in Uyuni and Atacama

Two of the clearest skies on the planet in one trip: the astronomy tour in San Pedro and the light play and stars over the salt flats.

Altitude, dryness and the absence of lights turn the Altiplano into a natural observatory. In San Pedro de Atacama the SP-07 astronomy tour uses telescopes and a guide who explains the southern constellations. In Uyuni, the BM-05 trip ends with the light play and a night photo session out on the salt flats.

When to go

Look for nights close to the new moon. Between April and October the sky over Uyuni is steadier; in Atacama the tour is only called off on the handful of cloudy days in the year.

  • Bring winter clothes even in summer.
  • A small tripod if you want your own long-exposure shots.
  • Ask about the celebration package, with decoration and a toast, for anniversaries.
